It was an evening of fun and let your hair down! Our dynamic Rtn. Ashish Sethi’s farm was well illuminated with “Diwas”! Rotary Surat West family turned up in large numbers for our annual feature “ Diwali Get-to-gather” and were seen greeting each other with “Happy Diwali and Happy New Year”. The spirit of fellowship and Happy hours truly provided perfect backdrop for every one to “unwind” themselves and enjoy the evening!
Ann Poonam Pankaj Shah had planned for games for Annets and we could see mothers taking keen interest in performance of their wards. The Dinner from “Crazy Bite” was delicious and the evening was truly colorful with ladies in Sarees. Our special thanks to Rtn. Ashish Sethi for providing his lush green lawn farm for this memorable evening.
Kudos to President Bankim and Hon. Secretary Anant for making perfect arrangements for an evening which will be remembered for a long time! The various games played were Musical chairs, Ring game, Four corners and Dice game. Our sincere thanks to Ann Poonam Shah for her painstaking efforts!

Celebrate World Polio Day - 24th October

This October marks 95 years since Jonas Salk, developer of the first safe and effective polio vaccine, was born. Saturday, 24 October, is World Polio Day – a perfect opportunity to join the fight to end the disease.
Rotarians are raising US$200 million to match the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation’s $355 million in grants by 30 June 2012. Here are some ways you can help:
* Organize a club fundraiser, such as an auction, a walkathon, or a purple pinkie project. Rotary clubs are each being asked to contribute at least $2,000 annually for three years. Get more ideas.
* Order reprints of the illustrated Amazing Stories of Polio! for new and prospective club members, and for local schools and libraries, at shop.rotary.org. For bulk orders, call 847-866-4600.
* Arrange a screening of The Final Inch at a theater. This Academy Award-nominated, 38-minute documentary follows health workers, including Rotarian volunteers, as they immunize children in India. The DVD is available at http://www.thefinalinch.org/.
* Create a link from your club’s Web site to the Rotary International YouTube channel, which includes videos and public service announcements on eradicating polio, or embed one of the video on your Web site.
* Make an individual donation to Rotary’s US$200 Million Challenge.
Find out how to purchase tickets for the Concert to End Polio, a one-night only performance by violinist and polio survivor Itzhak Perlman.

All Rotary clubs presented one award each to a person or institution of their own choice.The Samrudhhi hall at the Southern Gujarat Chamber of Commerce was packed to capacity as the 4-Way test of Rotary was recited. AG Rtn Sachin Shah then welcomed everyone for this long awaited event. District Vocational Chairperson Rtn PP Hetal Mehta explained the purpose of the vocational awards to the gathering.
Each club President or representative then invited their respective awardees to the dias and introduced them to the audience. It was indeed a humbling experience for everyone when the achievements and deeds of the awardees were announced. Surely many of the listeners must have resolved to strive harder in their own professions and work better for the community at large. Rotary needs to have more members of the stature and nature of the recipients of these awards.
The Vocational awards were presented at the hands of the District Governor Major S.K.Sharmaji. Our President Rtn Bankim Sitwala gave a brief idea about the various community service initiatives taken up by the organization ‘CHHAYADO’ to which our club presented the award. The work done by ‘CHHAYADO’ at Surat Civil hospital, among many other such works, is exemplary and commendable. Shri Bharatbhai, who is a trustee, accepted the award on behalf of this worthy organization.
It was then time for the DG Major Sharmaji to take stage and he commended the professional and social work of all the recipients of this award. He also lauded the efforts put in by his own Assistant Governors as well as all club Presidents and members who worked hard to make this event a grand success. He stressed the importance of inviting only quality people to join Rotary and extended an invitation to all the awardees to join this great organization.
Some awardees gave their response on how they felt on receiving this prestigious award. The awardees are;
01. Dr Nanubhai Desai
02. Shri Bhogilal H Bachkaniwala
03. Shri Lavjibhai D Dalia (Badshah)
04. Ms Ushaben Kothari
05. Shri Natubhai Karia

07. Shri Sunil Kanaiyalal Modi
08. Mrs Shenaz H Hilluwala
09. Shri Jayesh Chauhan

It was like a dream come true for many Rotarians who wish that all clubs of Surat area work together towards common objectives to make Rotary’s presence felt in the city more effectively and to take up larger and more worthwhile community service projects. He also thanked all the award recipients who graciously accepted these awards and spared time to be with us on this evening. He expressed gratitude towards the First lady of Rotary Club of Udhna, Ann Maharukh Chichgar who anchored the event so wonderfully as MOC.
The entire gathering rose to sing the National Anthem to conclude the program.The award program was followed by dinner.
THE 4-WAY TEST
One of the most widely printed and quoted statements of business ethics in the world is the Rotary "4-Way Test." It was created by Rotarian Herbert J. Taylor in 1932 when he was asked to take charge of the Chicago-based Club Aluminum Company, which was facing bankruptcy. Taylor looked for a way to save the struggling company mired in depression-caused financial difficulties. He drew up a 24-word code of ethics for all employees to follow in their business and professional lives. The 4-Way Test became the guide for sales, production, advertising and all relations with dealers and customers, and the survival of the company was credited to this simple philosophy.
Herb Taylor became president of Rotary International during 1954- 55. The 4-Way Test was adopted by Rotary in 1943 and has been translated into more than 100 languages and published in thousands of ways. The message should be known and followed by all Rotarians.
1. Is it the TRUTH?
2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?"
Declaration of Rotarians in business and professions
As Rotarian engaged in a business or profession, I am expected to :
1. Consider my vocation to be another opportunity to serve;
2. Be faithful to the letter and to the spirit of the ethical codes of my vocation;
3. Do all in my power to dignify my vocation and to promote the highest ethical standards on my chosen vocation;
4. Be fair to my employer, employees, associates, competitors, customers, the public, and all those with whom I have a business or professional relationship;
5. Recognize the honor and respect due to all occupations which are useful to society;
6. Offer my vocation talents to provide opportunities for young people to work for the relief of the special needs of others, and to improve the quality of life in my community;
7. Adhere to honesty in my advertising and all representations to the public concerning my business and profession;
8. Neither seek from nor grant to a fellow Rotarian a privilege or advantage not normally accorded others in a business or professional relationship.

“Shu Khabar…?
"Prime Minister Manmohan Singh summons the secretary and asks him "How come this Gujaratis know everything before anyone else knows about it"
Secretary: There is a phrase in Gujarati "Shu Khabar?" Manmohan Singh: What does that mean?
Secretary: It means "Whats the news" and each Gujjubhai asks this to other whenever they meet and the answers given by the other one circulates the news very fast and they happen to know everything the fastest.
PM decides to experience this so he removes his turban and has a clean shave and nice hair cut and dresses typically like a Gujrarati and reaches Ghatkopar the typical Gujju hub of Mumbai city.
He sees one Gujjubhai and asks him "Shu Khabar?"
The Gujjubhai replies "Salo Manmohaniyo Ghatkopar ma aavyo chhe em sambhaliyu chhe"...

Last Meeting: District Governor Major S.K.Sharmaji's Official visit to our club Wednesday, 30th September 2009
District Governor Major S.K.Sharmaji, accompanied by special aide Rtn Hitesh Jariwala, met our President Bankim and Hon Secretary Anant sharp at 3.45 pm and visited our new Rotarian Jigish Raval’s work place at Piplod where he took keen interest in the work done by Rtn Jigish Raval who is into fashion photography. Special thanks to Jigish who made his venue available at the last minute, since we could not visit Rtn Vinod Patel’s office (since his wife and daughter were hospitalized).
After that, he visited our club’s adopted SVP School where VP Rtn Ashit Kothari along with Bankim and Anant showed him the various initiatives taken by our club for the development of this school such as donation of computers, benches, student fees etc. Project of tree plantation was also shown to him.
This was followed by one to one meeting with President and Hon Secretary at President Bankim’s residence from 5PM to 6PM where he was given a booklet, which contained among other things, the clubs TRF contribution, Semi Annual report, Planning guide for effective Rotary Club, etc. The DG emphasized the need for increase in membership and increasing the donation to The Rotary Foundation. President Bankim told him that he would motivate members to do the same. The Dist. Governor also advised the club to take up more permanent projects, which Hon. Sec. Anant agreed to explore further.
It was then time for the club assembly, which started at sharp 6.15PM, with all the board members at Forum hall, Taj Gateway. All the responsible officers presented their detailed plans for the year for their respective committees under the avenues of service. The DG shared his thoughts about club administration, membership growth and retention, service projects, Rotary foundation and urged our club to contribute generously. Rtn Anant Agrawal thanked the DG for his presence and thoughts during the club assembly.
Everyone then dispersed for a break and reassembled at 8.45 pm for our club’s regular meeting at Taj Gateway, Forum Hall, which was packed to capacity with 40 plus Rotarians and Anns. The meeting was preceded by “ Kathiawadi “ dinner, which was appreciated by all. President Bankim welcomed everyone on this very important day for our club and thanked the District Governor for sparing an entire day to be with our club. He also welcomed PDG Bharatbhai Solanki, Sp. aide to DG. Rtn Hitesh Jariwala, AG Sachin Shah, Dist. Sec. Rtn.Narendra Saboo to our meeting. After announcing the birthday and anniversary greetings, he invited Rtn Setu Gandhi to introduce the DG to the gathering. The DG got a thunderous applause for his personal contribution of US $50000/- to the Rotary Foundation.
It was then time for Major S.K.Sharmaji to address the meeting. He stressed the importance of the thrust areas laid down by RI President John Kenny. He also requested the members to take active part in Polio eradication drives since India is now one of only four countries in the world where the disease still occurs.
He reminded the club to make their daily contribution to the ‘piggy bank’ sent by him to each and every member. This seems a brilliant idea as it might be difficult to shell out money at once for contribution to Rotary Foundation, but it is very easy to put currency in small denominations in the kitty on a daily basis. He shared his own successful experience with this experiment at his home. He urged everyone to experience the ‘joy of giving’ for a good cause.
At the end of the meeting, the DG circulated a ‘piggy bank’ among the audience and everyone including DG himself contributed. His address ended with a standing ovation by our club.
President Bankim presented a memento as a token of love to our beloved Dist Governor Major Sharmaji.PP Rtn Hitendra Mody then thanked the DG and all other dignitaries and district officers for their presence in the meeting. He also thanked our own club members who worked hard towards making this program a success.
Two new members (Jigish Raval and Shailesh Desai) were inducted in the club on this day at the hands of our District Governor and one member (Vijay Meucha) attended his first interest meeting. Our club welcomes the new members with open arms and looks forward to their company and contribution towards fellowship and service projects.

*Our club wishes speedy recovery to PDG Devendrabhai’s father-in-law who has taken ill and has been hospitalized at Baroda.
*Also our best wishes to Ann Radhika Vinod Patel and Annet Khushi Vinod Patel who are both hospitalized with illness. A heart felt ‘Get well soon’ to all.
