Kalyan Banerjee is choice for
2011-12 RI President
Kalyan Banerjee, a member of the Rotary Club of Vapi, Gujarat, India, since 1972, is the selection of the Nominating Committee for President of Rotary International in 2011-12. Banerjee will become the president-nominee on 1 October if there are no challenging candidates.

Banerjee said he would like to see Rotary "blossom from being the world's most recognized service organization to being the most important NGO [nongovernmental organization] in the world."Rotary, it is said, has the strength of a government and the tenderness of a parent," he added.

Banerjee is a director of United Phosphorus Limited, the largest agrochemical manufacturer in India, and the chair of United Phosphorus (Bangladesh) Limited. He is a member of the Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers and the American Chemical Society, a past president of Vapi Industries Association, and former chair of the Gujarat chapter of the Confederation of Indian Industry. He earned a degree in chemical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, in 1964.

Banerjee has served Rotary as a director, Rotary Foundation trustee, committee and task force chair, International Assembly group discussion leader, president's representative, and district governor.

The chair of the Southeast Asia Regional PolioPlus Committee, Banerjee has served as a member of the International PolioPlus Committee for many years and has attended international meetings with the World Health Organization and UNICEF in that capacity. Banerjee is a Major Donor, Benefactor, and Bequest Society member, and has been awarded the Foundation's Citation for Meritorious Service and its Distinguished Service Award.

Banerjee also serves as a trustee of Rotary club-sponsored trusts that support many educational and community development programs in India, including a 250-bed hospital. He noted that Rotary's strengths include its ability to attract leaders from different vocations around the world, as well as its role in promoting peace. "Rotary needs to become the preferred organization for today's generation to join and participate in, to make the world better and safer and happier," he said.

Banerjee's wife, Binota, is a social worker and Inner Wheel club member. The couple have two children and four grandchildren.

"Spark" joins Rotary Surat West family in conveying our Warmest Felicitations to Kalyanbhai and Binotaji for the Unique Honour bestowed on them and wish them all success in their mission!

Last Meeting: Wednesday, 12th August (Patriotic Songs Evening)

It was an evening to remember! For a change, the meeting was organized at Hotel Golden Star, Adajan which had very good facilites including good air conditioning, delicious food and lovely ambience! President Bankim dressed in tradional Indian dress welcomed every one and the hall was full to its capacity by the time we finished Dinner and started the program.

After extending cordial welcome to one and all, President Bankim invited PDG Devendra Shastri to share “Good News”. PDG Devendra Shastri shared the news of PRID Kalyan Banerjee being nominated as President of Rotary International for the year 2011-12 and recalled fond memories of his association with our club including being Chief Guest at our Charter presentation function on 6th June 1996 and Installation officer and Chief Guest in July 2007 at the Installation meeting of our club in which Rtn. Jayendra Parikh and his team for 2007-08 were installed by him and again he graced District Rotary Foundation seminar hosted by our club in October 2007. He also came as key note speaker in our club in August 2000 when Pankaj Marfatia was President of our club. The audience cheered this news with big applause.

It was then time to celebrate 62nd Independence Day of our country with Patriotic songs. It was heartening to see Annets, Anns and Rotarians coming forward to present songs with Orchestra support. The atmosphere truly became patriotic going down the memory lane and paying tribute to those men and women who laid down their lives during freedom struggle and also men and women in uniform who became “Shaheed” to safe guard our borders so that we can live in peace! Those who presented songs were;

New approach vital to membership growth
Potential club members are everywhere. But to get them to join Rotary, clubs must use creativity and imagination, says Past RI President Cliff Dochterman.
Dochterman believes clubs can thrive by seeking new members, retaining current ones, and sponsoring new clubs in the community. He offers the following tips:
Seeking new members
Clubs must have a specific plan in place, says Dochterman.
* Use a team approach. Teams should have several members who meet with qualified business and professional leaders to discuss the benefits of joining Rotary.
* Set aside one club meeting per month to be a "visitor day," to which all club members would invite a friend or prospective member.
* Seek out natural prospects, including Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholars, Rotaractors, and Group Study Exchange (GSE) team members.
Retaining current members
"Keeping current club members is just as important as bringing in new ones. The key is to adapt and change," says Dochterman.
* Make sure club meetings, service activities, and social events are interesting, fun, and worthwhile.
* Initiate more hands-on projects so club members will feel that they're making a difference.
* Eliminate 100 percent attendance requirements.
* Be alert to the symptoms that lead to resignation. Club leaders should be considerate to members' personal problems.

THIS INDEPENDENCE DAY - THINK GREEN – think what you can do for your country!
3 R’s of environmental protection. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
.
REDUCE
… YOUR CONSUMPTION

The first step to reducing your impact on the environment, is reducing the amounts of resources you consume and use. Think twice before you buy or use anything. Do you really need it? By reducing your consumption you will also decrease the amount of waste you produce.
YOUR WASTE
There are also many other ways to reduce your waste. The opportunities are nearly endless. Here are just a few ideas.
Think before you print or photocopy! Print and copy as little as possible.
Edit on screen, not on paper.
Use e-mail to minimize paper use.
Send and store documents like necessary papers for
life insurance plans and business proposals electronically instead of on paper.
When you must print or copy, do it double-sided.
Circulate documents instead of making an individual copy for everyone.
Change the margins on your Word documents. The default margins on the documents you print are 1.25 inches on all sides. Simply changing the margins to 0.75 inches will reduce the amount of paper you use by almost 5 percent.
… YOUR ENERGY CONSUMPTION
There are so many ways of optimizing your energy consumption
Turn off unused or unneeded lights.
Use natural lighting instead of electric lighting whenever possible.
If you have a desk lamp, make sure it uses fluorescent bulbs (instead of incandescent bulbs).
Select cold water for washing clothes.
Keep windows and doors closed in heated and air-conditioned areas.
Turn off computers when they are not in use.
Turn off printers, especially laser printers, unless printing.
Don’t use power strips to turn on all computers and desk equipment at once.
When purchasing computers and peripherals, buy low wattage equipment
Minimize use of screen savers and instead enable power management features.
Purchase only energy-efficient products.
Move your refrigerator. Leaving space between your refrigerator and the wall increases air circulation around the condenser coils, allowing the fridge to operate more efficiently.
… YOUR OIL CONSUMPTION AND POLLUTION
Drive Efficiently - If you must drive, buck the trend toward more wasteful vehicles and drive a fuel efficient car, i.e. one which gets more miles per litre, and don’t drive it more than you really need to!
REUSE
Plastic containers can become food storage, paper can become wrapping paper. The ways in which to reuse things are unlimited. All you need is to be creative. If being creative is not your thing, here are some other ideas:
Reuse envelopes by placing a new label over the old address.
Designate a box for scrap paper and use it for printing all drafts or unofficial documents.
Reuse plastic bags or better get a reusable canvas bag.

RECYCLE
When buying any type of product, see if it is available with post consumer recycled content.
Wrap presents in gift bags. Once you tear the wrapping paper off a holiday gift it ends up in the recycle bin, but gift bags can be used over and over again.
Production of recycled paper uses only half the water and 3/4 of the energy than new paper.
Every ton of recycled paper saves almost 400 gallons of oil, three cubic yards of landfill space and seventeen trees.
You could operate a TV set for an estimated three hours with the energy saved by recycling just one aluminum can.
Thinking green means being aware of our interconnectedness with the world and reflecting on the unintended damage we cause nature in the daily course of our lives. Thinking green leads to acting green - taking corrective action to make environmental responsibility a reality.
"Every person is the right person to act. Every moment is the right moment to begin". THE
Time to Act is Now!
