Know Our District Governor Major S K Sharmaji

Rtn. Major SK Sharma, an active member of Rotary Club of Udhna, is a science graduate and Ex-Indian Army (Artillery) Officer who retired in 1992 after dedicating 23 years to the Nation. Bold in looks but humble at heart 'Major Sharma' as he is popularly known, carries under his belt all the rare distinction an officer can dream in one's Army career 'Senior Command', 'Staff College' and 'Long Gunnery Staff College' are the few of the many achievements. Dynamic as he is, 'Major Sharma' at the Army Command Level reined supreme as a sportsman & was outstanding in Football, Boxing, Golf and Polo.

1971 is the year which will be remembered in the history for the crucial “INDO-PAK” war, where Major SK Sharma fought as a Commando and was given the most difficult task of entering the rare areas of enemy to disrupt & destroy their supply line and Line of communication. This brave commando was hit by a bullet in his lower abdomen during an airborne attack at Dhaka (Bangladesh). Currently, Major Sharma runs one of the largest Security Services known as “SISA Group” as its Chairman; which employs 8000 Ex-servicemen and has its presence all over the Country. He is also a distributor of I0C-Indane Gas.

Major SK Sharma joined Rotary Club of Udhna in 1999. In the ascending Rotary career, he won the Best Club Secretary award for the R.Y. 2002-03. He became President in the R.Y. 2005-06 and won “The Best President” award along with 20 other District / R.I. awards for his Club. As the club President Major Sharma was bestowed with “Rotary International Public Relation Award” by PRIP. Carl- Wilhelm Stenhammar. Major Sharma's commitment did not stop but gained further momentum as he is the only Rotarian of R.I. Dist. 3060 who has personally contributed US $ 17,000 during the R.Y. 2005-06 and Major SK Sharma now has become a Major Donor level III having contributed $50000 to foundation. Having trudged on his motto of Life “If you refuse to accept anything but the BEST, you very often get it”, Major SK Sharma was unanimously nominated as District Governor Nominee of R.I. Dist. 3060 for the R.Y. 2009-10, as it's Governor.

But Life is not always a joyous flow; Major Sharma lost his wife “VARSHAJI” in the year 2004. Blessed with a daughter 'Tanu' who is happily married in Surat; son 'Sameer' who is a member of R.C. of Udhna and the Managing Director of “SISA Group”, a Paul Harris Fellow- who also served Merchant Navy for eight years as a Second Officer but had to succumb to join his father business. 'Sameer' is married to 'Anubha' who is also member of R.C. of Udhna, a Paul Harris Fellow and is managing IOC distributorship + is Director (Finance) of “SISA Group”. All the four member of the family are members of Paul Harris Society. “ROTARY' is his only love but grand daughter “RAASHI' also a Paul Harris Fellow has added life to Major Sharma's world after loss of beloved wife.

“Spark” joins Rotary Surat West family in according Cordial Welcome to DG Major Sharmaji!

JOKE

The other night I was invited out for a night with "the boys."I told my wife that I would be home by midnight...promise!Well, the hours passed and the beer was going down way too easy.At around 3 A.M., drunk as a skunk, I headed for home. Just asI got in the door, the cuckoo clock in the hall started up and cuckooed 3 times.
Quickly, I realized she'd probably wake up, so I cuckooed another9 times. I was really proud of myself, having a quick wittysolution, even when smashed, to escape a possible conflict. The next morning my wife asked me what time I got in, and I told her 12 o'clock. She didn't seem disturbed at all. Whew! Gotaway with that one!
She then told me that we needed a new cuckoo clock. When I askedher why she said, "Well, last night our clock cuckooed three times, then said 'oh shit,' cuckooed 4 more times, cleared its throat, cuckooed another 3 times, giggled, cuckooed twice more, and then fainted!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wisdom Of Life

Don't spend major time with minor people.
If there are people in your life who continually disappoint you,
break promises, stomp on your dreams, are too judgmental,
have different values and don't have your back during difficult times...
that is not friendship.

To have a friend, be a friend.
Sometimes in life as you grow,
your friends will either grow or go.
Surround yourself with people who reflect values,
goals interests and lifestyles.

When I think of any of my successes,
I am thankful to God from whom all blessings flow,
and to my family and friends who enrich my life.

Over the years my phone book has changed because I changed,
for the better. At first, you think you're going to be alone,
but after awhile, new people show up in your life that
make it so much sweeter and easier to endure.

Just Laugh

The FBI had an opening for an assassin. After all the background checks, interviews and testing were done, there were 3 finalists; two men and a woman. For the final test, the FBI agents took one of the men to a large metal door and handed him a gun. "We must know that you will follow our instructions no matter what the circumstances. Inside the room you will find your wife sitting in a chair . . . Kill her!!"

The First man said, "You can't be serious. I could never shoot my wife." The agent said, "Then you're not the right man for this job. Take your wife and go home."

The second man was given the same instructions. He took the gun and went into the room. All was quiet for about 5 minutes. The man came out with tears in his eyes, "I tried, but I can't kill my wife." The agent said, "You don't have what it takes. Take your wife home."

Finally, it was the woman's turn. She was given the same instructions, to kill her husband. She took the gun and went into the room. Shots were heard, one after another. They heard screaming, crashing, banging on the walls. After a few minutes, all was quiet. The door opened slowly and there stood the woman, wiping the sweat from her brow. "This gun was loaded with false bullets" she said. "I had to beat him to death with the chair!!"

MORAL: Women are extremely determined.. Don't mess with them?

Child's View of Thunderstorms?
A little girl walked to and from school daily. Though the weather that morning was questionable and clouds were forming, she made her daily trek to school. As the afternoon progressed, the winds whipped up, along with lightning.

The mother of the little girl felt concerned that her daughter would be frightened as she walked home from school. ? She also feared the electrical storm might harm her child. Full of concern, the mother got into her car and quickly drove along the route to her child's school. As she did, she saw her little girl walking along.

At each flash of lightning, the child would stop, look up, and smile. More lightning followed quickly and with each, the little girl would look at the streak of light and smile. When the mother drove up beside the child, she lowered the window and called, "What are you doing?

The child answered, "I am trying to look pretty because God keeps taking my picture." May God bless you today and every day as you face the storms that come your way!

Election issues- Excerpt from RI Director K R Ravindran's News Letter for September 2009

One of the messages I am carrying to districts from the Rotary Leadership is that it is time that districts put a stop to all forms of electioneering, canvassing and campaigning whilst picking their District Leadership. The maximum number of complaints that come up before the RI Board on account of election disputes are from India. In addition to complaints on the election of District Governor, the Board also now is getting complaints on DGNC elections and CoL elections.

This attitude of complaints negates all the good that we do and all the progress we make on other fronts. It spoils the image of India in particular and the sub continent in general.

Legal costs
The Board and indeed the hierarchy of Rotary are tired of the complaints that are coming in from India and the high legal costs incurred by the Board on account of elections connected litigation. While we are attempting to reduce costs in every front it seems a shame that our cost of litigation is going up.
Remember all this is our money – yours and mine.

Further, the leadership believes that when Rotary elections are conducted in this environment, it does longterm damage to the organization and causes deep rooted rifts between members whilst driving away potential new members. It also results in very poor caliber members offering themselves for leadership positions. Thiswe do not need the Board to tell us because we are aware of it ourselves.

The President, the President‐Elect and the General Secretary have requested and asked that we immediately put an end to this deplorable situation and this is the message that I carry throughout India.

Checks and balances

RI is currently in the process of setting together a series of regulations and practices which will curb electioneering. Some of the actions being contemplated include:
1) Disqualify both the nominee and the challenger and / or challengers or candidates, if it appears that one or all of them are guilty of some infractions of the rules. In such cases, the Board would be authorized to appoint a PDG to serve as Governor of the district in the disputed year.
2) Remove from office any DG who acts improperly in conducting the election process or knowingly condones improper acts.
3) Declare that a PDG, who acts improperly in promoting or assisting a candidate, is no longer in good standing. In addition, for districts that experience three or more election complaints in a five year period, the Board would be authorized to dissolve the district and to divide its clubs among the surrounding districts.

I am requesting every DG to appoint a completely independent person to take charge of all matters concerning elections. This person must be an individual trusted by and acceptable to every member of the district – if there is such a person. If you do not have such a person, this in itself is a sad indictment of the district.

I am requesting DGs and DGEs that hereafter candidates be precluded from funding their PETS or Assemblies or segments of their Conference Programme. The practice of candidates putting up posters (with or without their photo) welcoming participants to district events must cease. Such candidates will be debarred from contesting the election altogether and the DG is compromising his own position in the process as these acts can only be done with his concurrence.

We have a fair idea of the districts which encourage these methods and if a DG does not take steps to effectively end this practice then he does so at his peril. The practice of candidates visiting clubs offering cash for projects and sometimes even as payment of membership dues must also stop. In fact it will be a good idea if candidates stop visiting clubs during the entire year in which they offer, or intend to offer, their name as a candidate for election, until the election process is complete.

"Spark" congratulates RI Director Ravindranji for his bold and no-nonsense statement on electionering and wrong practices which goes with it. It will be interesting for grassroot level Rotarians like me to see how our Leaders implements RID's statement in letter and spirit!

GSE breaks new ground

first all-wheelchair GSE teams, from districts 9680 (New South Wales, Australia) and 5490 (Arizona, USA)

Determined to host an all-wheelchair GSE, Tegarden found a partner in Tony Castley, 2008-09 governor of District 9680, whom he met at the 2007 RI Convention in Salt Lake City, Utah. Past district governors Harold Sharp (9680) and Don Schiller (5490) coordinated the exchange, and the idea became reality. Kubacz, now a member of the Rotary Club of Phoenix-West, served as the Arizona team leader.

Some Rotarians were initially a little uneasy about an all-wheelchair GSE because of a perception that disabled people "are either subnormal or unable to live and travel independently and hold down full-time, worthwhile employment," says Sharp, a member of the Rotary Club of Crows Nest, New South Wales, and the GSE’s cochair. "As a result of the exchange, the attitude in our district has totally changed."

Sharp, who is retired from a career in nonprofit management, counts himself in that group. "Though I have for many years been involved with people with disabilities, the wheelchair GSE allowed me to become very involved on a day-to-day basis. It was only then that I realized that I was totally underestimating [disabled people’s] abilities and desire to be judged on their results and not their appearances."

In Arizona, "we've opened the door now to people with disabilities," says Schiller, a member of the Rotary Club of Prescott-Sunup and the district's GSE chair. "We might not do another all-wheelchair GSE, but I can see disabled people participating in our next GSE, just like anyone else."

“All that glitters is not Gold”. Yes it could be a solitaire or a diamond as our Rotarian Snehal Pachchigar explained to us at his showroom on this fine Sunday morning.

Even though it was a regular working day for Pachchigar & Sons jewelers, Rtn Snehal and Ann Purvi had gone out of the way to make all arrangements for the meeting. Seating arrangements were made on the first floor of the showroom. Breakfast and tea was served for everyone present. Anns were present in large numbers since this was a subject of their interest and liking.

After the welcome and the birthday and anniversary greetings by President Bankim, it was time for Rtn Snehal to take stage. In his own lucid style, he explained the criteria of grading diamonds and the 3 ‘C’s (Carat, Clarity and Color). He also informed the audience about the things to be kept in mind while buying diamonds and jewelry so that we can get the proper value for our money.

He also imparted information on the various institutes and accreditation agencies like IDI, IGI and RAPAPORT which give authenticity reports and certificates for the items we purchase. The important thing here he said is to tally the number on the certificate with the number on the item purchased to ensure that the certificate is for the same item. The certification can be obtained even after you have purchased the item. Now that’s what you call ‘CRYSTAL CLEAR’ just like those diamonds are.

The presentation was followed by a question-answer session in which Rotarians and Anns actively participated. I am sure now many of us will feel more confident and safe about investing in Solitaires and Diamonds and we also know the reliable source from where to buy them.

The much awaited lucky draw was then held with 2 chits being drawn from a box full of chits with the names of all those present. The winners of the two 1 gm Gold lagdis were Anns Rakhi Gandhi and Pooja Gajjar. Congratulations to you both.

Three ‘PIT YOUR WITS’ prizes were given to IPP Rtn Tarun Sethi and one to Ann Paulomi Akruwala since we could not give the gifts in previous meetings. Rtn Madhav Khaitan gave the vote of thanks to wonderful hosts Snehal and Purvi Pachchigar.
